Listening Assignment

Miles Davis – So What

I really like his trumpet playing it sounds a lot like jazz but not like a big band. His playing definitely takes the front stage compared to the rest of the band but he still fits in with the other musicians.

Charles Mingus- The Chill of Death

This piece is really obscure compared to the songs we’ve listen to so far that it kind of gives you a chill. The narration definitely sounds like it came out of a horror movie.

James Brown- The Big Payback

This song just screams 70’s. I swear one of his songs was in a movie. Nevertheless his voice is so swanky it makes you want to move and get down.

Parliament Funkadelic- Mothership Connection

I’m not too sure where to start with this one but it’s definitely funky to say the least. The sax and trumpet are awesome and the lyrics are too.

John Coltrane- My Favorite Thing

I really like this jazz version of My Favorite Things. I think the original song is from The Sound of Music. This song is so smooth it kind of reminds me of the music that would be played in fancy restaurants or hotels.
