Fela Kuti “Zombie”- The beginning of this piece starts out very soft then begins to buildup, having the instruments play louder and louder. I believe the saxophone was the strongest in this piece and stood out compared to the other instruments, I love how it keeps a steady and fast momentum. It’s definitely the type of piece to make you want move around in your seat, even halfway through this when a person or a group would sing, “zombie”, it just became very catchy especially when you'd have the instruments in the background all together with the beat, just the simplicity of them saying the word zombie over and over works well with the different scales and instruments played. Towards the end, there was a solo where i believed it was played by the saxophone and it lasted for a while where they continued to drag it out, until finally the end it with the crew of instruments.
Pagan Poetry “Bjork”- In my opinion this piece is the kind you’d want listen to twice to get the beauty and the impact of her voice.I liked how in the beginning of the piece it started out by having one instrument play, like it was going up and down the keys on the keyboard almost like rain or droplets of water hitting the ground one by one. What was also interesting is how in the end it abruptly paused and she began to repeat over and over how she loved him so and you can hear the pain in her voice as she repeats the words, “care”. There is definitely a story behind this piece, it almost feels as if this piece could have different meanings in the way she chooses and sings her words, it could either mean she’s heart broken or in pain by something else, or the “she loves him”, could have a different meaning to it.
Radiohead “Idioteque”- I like the whole techno thing thats going on in this one. Im not usually a big fan when it comes to techno especially the ones where it sounds like the same thing happening over and over, but this artist made it work. This piece is pretty interesting hearing different sounds here and there and then you got that one person singing in the background trying to balance everything out, It almost sounds like an intro to a game when you before you begin to play. Even in the beginning to end it has this strange vibe to it, not bad or upsetting, more like creepy but the kind where its mysterious, and curiosity is involved. Overall, this piece is worth listening to.
Led Zeppelin “Whole Lotta Love”- What stood out to me the most in this piece is the guitar sounds and strings played. It’s different to what I usually hear, even the lead singer voice was something I’m not used to hearing so its definitely different but it just has this charisma and spirit that fits well into this piece. I’d have to say this is my least favorite piece that Ive listened to, again mot my thing but exploring different genres of music definitely opens up your ears a little bit more and makes you think differently compared to the type of music your used to listening to.
Captain Beefhart “Moonlight on Vermont”- The opening of the drum and cymbal combination is hard to miss, I love how they both combine with each other then other instruments began to join in. At first it seemed like it was all over the place, the drums were off beat and the singer had a raspy voice, some parts would be off beat, but it just seemed to work that way as if the artist meant to have it play that way.
