Thoughts on Wall of Sound Pet Sounds and The Beatles

Overall I find the music from all of these artists to be old-fashioned sounding but they all have this rhythm that makes you feel like dancing and being happy. The Beatles carry a unique sound in that their music makes you feel like you are floating in mid-air in total tranquility and peace. I feel as though the music from all these artists makes the listener feel Peaceful even if the subject matter (when analyzed) may be darker than the surface of the music. Therefore I believe the goal of these artists in creating their musical pieces was to bring about peace within listeners so that peace is brought onto the world. These are just my thoughts on the pieces from these artists, as far as being analytical and critical I do not have much to contribute towards that.

Honey Review

The piano at the beginning of the song reminds me of the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 4 in C sharp minor. The tone of the music gives off two different moods the piano being solemn while the sax gives a fast paced vibe. It seems like there is an alto sax and a soprano sax. There is also another instrument that I can not identify. The two tones of the saxes combined with the piano tends to make the different sound clash with each other.

The Brilliance of DOOM's Soundtrack
An analysis of the DOOM game soundtrack, and what made it work.
Its a great video that gives great insight into how music for video games is composed, as well as what can happen when a composer fully takes advantage of the medium and his/her talent.

MONDAY In CLASS ASSIGNMENT

ON MONDAY MORNING we are going to do and in class exercise.
You are going to make some noises and play with AUDIO TOOL for about 40 minutes.
https://www.audiotool.com/

If you check the blog before monday like i have asked you, you can play with Audio Tool all weekend and have fun with it. Then you can make a track and get participation points and be ahead of the game for  the homework that will be do on WEDNESDAY morning, when we have our first in class Vocabulary Quiz :-)

Synthmode, a very cool blog about audio design said this about it:

Audiotool is a kick-ass online music production studio that eliminates the need of a muscular computer to process all of your virtual instruments and FX, because all the processing happens in the cloud!

Sounds like a futuristic science fiction deal, right? Well, it's pretty real, and it's becoming more and more popular, especially because it's FREE. All tracks, samples and presets are also stored on the Audiotool servers so you never need to worry about backing up anything. Sounds too good to be true, huh?

Well, I gave it a shot and I had a very interesting loop going on in just minutes.  I can see the limitations (such as not being able to run your own VST's), but those limitations can actually result in increased creativity.  The workflow is very good and easy to get used to, especially if you're into actual hardware and mixers, as all connections are made mimicking that of real gear.  There are ins and outs that you visually plug in/out.  Overall I was very impressed with the experience and instant creative factor of Audiotool.

The website also allows you to Publish your finished track straight from the app to the Audiotool website, SoundCloud, Youtube or Facebook.  In fact, if you want to get a real preview of what this app is able to do for you check out the "charts" with some of the best tracks produced by the Audiotool online community--trully impressive and inspiring.  Check out this track:

How The Pieces Made Me Feel - Stephanie Montaleza

In the first piece, Gymnopedie No. 1 by Erik Satie to me is a wonderful piece. I get this sense of peace and calmness, as if there’s no worry in the world. For example, as soon as the song played I can almost get this vision of someone floating in the middle of the sea at night, just appreciating things life, in complete peace and silence. Letting the sound of the waves soothe them. I just find this to be a soothing song to listen to and the fact that it’s all played by one instrument. There were definitely some repetition, hearing the same notes from the beginning play out in some parts in this piece but overall, I find it amazing because in the end it does make you feel some type of way whether it’s relaxed, happy or sad. The second piece, Ambient 1: Music for airports by Brian Eno almost sounds like church music. The type of instruments I picture playing are church pipe organs. Even in the beginning you can hear how it begins to repeat the same notes over and over and then it transitions into this deeper tone but continues with the same beat and rhythm. As soon as it reaches the middle of the piece it sounds like a chorus was added, and they begin to sing. Automatically I just picture a chorus in the church all singing together, almost like a solo. Then in the end of the piece it goes back to that same sound that played in the beginning but this time just played in different notes but still sounding like church music. I just honestly get this church image in my head after hearing this piece. As for the third piece, Discreet Music by Brian Eno, again sounds like the same type of instrument played in Ambient 1: Music for airports. It’s very calm and again I hear a repetition in this one, except in some parts it’ll go from being loud in the beginning then slowly getting softer and softer towards the end. Lastly, for the fourth piece, Wind on Water by Fripp and Eno I found it to be different and interesting. It goes from being soft and as the piece continues it starts getting louder and louder and almost as if the sun is beginning to rise and I just picture the flowers beginning to bloom and birds flying out, I just get this sense of morning and sunrise and this piece fits well as if the sun just came up and it’ the beginning of a new day.

How the music makes me feel - Lamar Travis

Brian Eno’s Ambient 1 has a very somber yet uplifting tone throughout the entire album. My initial thoughts on the the first song was that it was meant for a depressing scene in a movie. The sounds of the piano are very soft and is the reason as to why the overall mood is depressing.

The song that plays at 17:38 is very ominous with the multiple voices say “Ah” in synchronous. The track makes me feel as if I had just discovered something like I was Indiana Jones or someone like that.

The further I listened to the album the more I noticed that Brian Eno’s music continues with that same somber/ominous tone. Eno seems to be a big fan of that soft piano and the choir of people singing that ominous music.

Not until around 41 minutes in, the tone changes to what I believe is a more inspirational tone. I personally do not know the name of it, it may be a trumpet. But this “trumpet” makes it seem more inspirational to me since it reminds me of when someone in the service dies, they play the trumpets during the funeral. The reason why I would say it is more inspirational is when someone dies in the line of duty I take it as them sacrificing their life to protect others.

How the music made me feel - Matthew Castillo

The first piece "Fripp and Eno" reminded me of death and being born again at the same time. It was exhilarating to listen to in the car on the way to class, I felt the vibrations through my body a little but there were certain parts where bells or some sort of chimes came in that just bugged me because I guess my ears are sensitive to the frequency, this was similar in a lot of the other pieces as well. Overall I felt this piece would have been lovely to be in an Indie film like a coming of age movie or something, I find this true with the rest of the songs included too. The second piece "Discreet Music" made me feel like I was walking through a forest or a park and cherry blossoms were falling down on me, I had like an Anime moment with this piece and I very much enjoyed the melody. The third piece "Music for Airports" felt clever because it reminded me of the end of a sad movie when people usually leave on some kind of "find yourself journey", it was really deep and self reflecting. The final piece "Gymnopedie" was just weird, I don't know how to particularly describe it but it felt like piano music played in a hotel lobby or something. I couldn't relate it to film very much, but it felt like I was just sitting at a hotel lobby waiting to meet someone that was very very late... These are the things I pictured while listening to these pieces, I don't know if this is "analytical or critical" of the pieces but I can surely redo this assignment if it wasn't done correctly... Anyway hope you readers enjoyed my analysis, if you can even call it that, just wrote from the heart, because that's where I feel the music, "music in my heart" as my music professor would say.

Honey Review

I found "Honey" as a composition fairly simple yet unique in ways. Starting of with the Grand Piano, quickly introduces what sound like electronic strings. For the first 2/3 of the song it is mostly classical but then the sax is introduced and the song begins to take on a jazz vibe. Right at the end there is the synth sound that I can only describe as an heavily muffled ship horn to close out the song.

All your Interwebs are mine.

I will explain what this does on WEDNESDAY

WINDOWS ASIO DRIVERS and CONFIGURATION

I will be going over the Configurations you should have for windows and macintosh on Wednesday in class for the first 20 minutes of class, so if you are still having issues make sure you are on time OR you can come after class to make sure your configuration is working properly or borrow a cable if for some odd reason things are not working.

REMEMBER: you are using ASIO driver so in ADOBE AUDITION got to

Edit--->Preferences---->Audio Hardware

the default is MME and it will usually say
"no device available -- not working"

In Device Class click the drop down and choose ASIO

ooooooh now i get it........

fool with it until it works.

I will make sure we are all working before we proceed.

Do your best to solve it without me. Be courageous, you can do this.

PLAY WITH SOUNDS

Here is a very basic Web Based Synthesizer:

https://webaudiodemos.appspot.com/midi-synth/index.html

It has two oscillators that give us our WAVEFORMS: Sine, Square, Triangle & Sawtooth

It also has the ability to MODULATE those waveforms with ANOTHER Oscillator usually called an LFO = LOW FREQUENCY OSCILLATOR

It has A FILTER for shaping the sounds

It also has an FILTER ENVELOPE & a Volume or AMPLITUDE ENVELOPE

All these are the basics of sound design;

VOCAB WORDS  and Elements we will cover on WEDNESDAY

WAVEFORM: SINE, SAW, TRIANGLE, SQUARE,  [Pulse or NOISE]

MODULATION

LFO = LOW FREQUENCY OSCILLATOR

FILTER = LP [LOW PASS, BANDPASS, HIGH PASS]

ENVELOPE = [ATTACK, DECAY, SUSTAIN, RELEASE]

You can play the keyboard with your computer keyboard!!

Play some sounds, choose a variety of waveforms, combinations and "tweak" the filters and envelopes. Get familiar with sounds you like and how the waveforms sound. I will give detailed explanations of the vocabulary and the elements in class

FIRST ASSIGNMENT PREPARATION

This first in-class assignment is designed to get you comfortable with recording sound with your computer & INSIDE your computer.

1.) You should already have ADOBE AUDITION installed on your computer. Please make arrangements to have it installed and ready for class by Monday's meeting.

2M.) MAC USERS: Install soundflower. It will enable you to route audio from one program [LIKE YOUR BROWSER] to a audio recording program [LIKE ADOBE AUDITION]

https://github.com/mattingalls/Soundflower/releases/download/2.0b2/Soundflower-2.0b2.dmg

You have to reboot after you install it for it to show up. It will show up in
AUDIO-MIDI SETUP

Go-->Utilities-->AudioMidiSetup

The idea is to select soundflower as the OUTPUT of the System so it can record internally

2W.) WINDOWS USERS: Install ASIO4ALL.
http://ccm.net/download/start/download-830-asio4all

3.) So go to http://www.freesound.org/ and get your 5 sounds working, designed. SPEND TIME making selections choosing something, designing something, be creative, be courageous. I will be able to tell if you just picked 5 sounds without any thought. And i am not talking about a zen "no thought" type of methodology. You know what i mean. We're cool.

When you switch to soundflower on mac the sound will disappear until you monitor it inside the Adobe Audition program. You will have to tweak the  preferences/options to get the sound to record into the program and still hear it at the same time. DO your best. We will go over it slowly on Monday if  you have trouble.

Windows users will have to tweak certain things in their sound preferences in both Windows and ASIO4ALL to get it to work properly. It takes a little tweaking but it will eventually work. Don't worry, we'll get you to a solution.

FOR FUN::
MAC USERS DOWNLOAD LNX STUDIO
http://lnxstudio.sourceforge.net/

WINDOWS USERS DOWNLOAD LMMS
https://lmms.io/

Everyone try Cecilia too and try to have some fun with sounds:
http://ajaxsoundstudio.com/software/cecilia/

We'll see which one everyone likes and we'll talk about it

Have fun.
