Listening Assignment (3/8/17)

Reviewed by: Emily Cesarini

Public Enemy “Don’t Believe The Hype”
I did not enjoy this song as I really dislike rap music I just can’t get into the music. The beat of this song was okay overall but I didn’t like the whirring noise included in the beat.

Beastie Boys “So What Do You Want”
Again I don’t particularly enjoy rap when it is the entire song. Even though this piece wasn’t strictly rap as it had some rock mixed with it just wasn't to my taste.

Nirvana “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

I really liked this song's beat and lyrics I have listened to it many times before. The instrumentals came together really nicely with the vocals. I liked the rock instrumental segment that split up the piece.

Public enemy - Don't believe the hype.

This is leaning more to what I usually listen, rap. It's obviously older than nowaday's stuff which also means it has a very different style. Rap or hip hop used to be more like this, clear words rhyming and sending a message, usually coming from a man of dark skin. Nowadays we've lost a lot of that, which doesn't mean it's worse either. I do enjoy today's music better than the older tracks, might be because of the bases today are usually a bit more worked on I think. If you have a good base, the song has much more potential, and I think today's songs do that a bit better. Anyways, this is good stuff, It's funny how some messages sent in the eighties or nineties still apply today.. The message here is very strong.

beastie boys - so what'cha want

Well I understand how people can like this but I can't say I do. The base was very monotonous and didn't really add much. Plus I couldn't understand any lyrics because of the blurr-effect happening maybe because it's an old video or maybe because the song was just recorded like this. I wouldn't really put this strictly under hip hop, even though it has a feel to it.. I'm not sure.

Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit

Amazing instrumental. Simply amazing. Plus five hundred million views on youtube made me think since the beginning it would be something special. And indeed, it's something special. I'm not really into the whole yelling and screaming in songs, which in this song barely happens, but this was just a great piece. Apart from that I think the way he slows down and brings the volume down, and then picks it back up and starts yelling is very interesting it makes you feel like in a story maybe.
Great song.

Weekend Listening -Public enemy, Beastie Boys, Nirvana

Public Enemy - Don't Believe the Hype
I’m a big fan of Public Enemy, mainly because my father played their music all the time.  Don’t believe the hype is the type of song I wish was being made nowadays. The song is fun, upbeat, and the MCs are actually legible and are actually saying things with meaning.

Beastie Boys - So What Cha Want
I was never a huge fan the Beastie Boys other than a few songs here and there. However, “So what cha want” is a pretty cool song. My favorite part of the song is when verse finishes and that guitar riff plays. I do also enjoy the Beastie Boys blend between rap and rock.

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Smells Like teen spirit is possibly one of the most iconic songs of the 90s. I absolutely love the guitar playing throughout. All you have to hear is the first second of this song to instantly recognize it. My absolutely favorite part of this song is the vocals by Kurt Cobain. The vocals are so catchy and I like how the song switches up from being calm to Cobain just singing his heart out.  Overall this song just has so much energy and emotions around it. I just love it.

Weekend Listening 3/19/17

Nirvana, Smells Like Teen Spirit:
I am biased about this week's choice of listening. I grew up in the early 90's, so naturally you couldnt escape these songs. This was in no way a bad thing. Nirvana has always been one of my most favorite bands and songs like this are why. The high energy thrash guitar licks, punky drums and over all angsty feel of the song perfectly reflect Cobain's cryptic lyrics about being a teenager. From the sound of this track, to the imagery it congers up, it all fits very well. I have excellent memories attached to both this song and the music of Nirvana (which I wont get into here). There's not much I can say outside of this being an all around killer ballad about the light and dark of being a teen.

So Whatcha Want, The Beastie Boys:
I have an appreciation for the Beastie Boys. Once again, their music brings back memories of inlining and skateboarding during the summers of my youth. Looking back on it, I suppose that the style of writing and devil may care delivery of Beastie Boys songs reflected the way I felt as a youth to a tee. The Beastie Boys never really cared too much about being in tune or harmonizing, but rather wanted to bring the audience a hip-hop meets rock and roll feel. Very loose off the collar and punchy lyrics. Their music was and remains beat-centric and funny enough, most Beastie Boys songs deliver a clear lyrical message that the listener can both understand and get behind; we relate to it. This track in particular doesnt focus on message, but rather on style. The beat is heavy and distinct, and every sound has been engineered even down to the vocals. The Beastie Boys were one of the first bands to really bring popular culture into their songs to make the lyrics relateable to the audience through references rather than message or meaning, although many of their songs do just that. Also worth noting, their beats are really unique. Case and point they made this song's beat out of drums, disk scratches, organ, tambourine and electric guitar. To fill any empty space they echo their voices in an interesting way.

Dont believe the Hype, Public Enemies:
I love hip-hop. What cool and simple style. Take a nice drum beat, a guitar backing track and start laying lyrics over it. Throw in a strange outside sound in musical time to add some more oratory interest and you get some cool stuff. Like most hip hop, the music focuses on equal parts beats and lyrics. Rhyme is obviously important, but thats nothing new to music. The new element brought into this particular genre of music is diction. Diction is important in any rap or hip hop because the lead singer is not actually singing; they are rhyming. This means that you don't have to worry so much about pitch, sustaining notes or clarity, but rather on annunciation and timing. Each word must be delivered in musical time with the correct inflection or the impact is easily diminished. That said, Public Enemy kills it.

Listening Assighnment: Public Enemy, Beastie Boys and Nirvana

Public Enemy - Don’t Believe The Hype: I honestly enjoyed this piece, in my opinion it opens up your eyes more in the reality of things, because what they’re basically saying is don’t always believe what you hear and see for example the music industry has always been a pioneer in hype. Especially with todays social media, hype is hitting new types of levels. Public enemy themselves try to educate people with their music bringing people together by exposing hypocrisies and preach awareness to those who have no common bond with different people from different backgrounds. In the end I do believe the music they put out there reached out to some people and made them see the reality of things. This piece is definitely related to today’s society and when it comes down to the beats and rhythm of the piece it's definitely caught my attention from the start and as I danced to the beat the lyrics came right after which made this piece so powerful and it just tied it all together.
Beastie Boys - So What Cha Want: I’ll admit in the beginning of the song it threw me off a bit because you have this mellow chill beat, almost soothing but then these group of guys just get a close up at the camera and start yelling, at least that’s how I took it as. It was a little hard to understand what they were saying you can definitely tell that they're voices were tweaked and messed with, sounding like a static tv. I mostly enjoyed the instrumental part of the piece more than what they were saying mostly because like i said before it was kind of hard to understand. I feel as though they have this combination of rock and rap, it’s definitely different from what I ever heard and has this strong energy to it. It almost feels like those types of movie where you have that badass character who doesn’t give a crap about things and does whatever he wants, almost like in their music video.
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit: I love this song, hands down. I remember my cousin introducing this song to me and I immediately fell in love, it’s definitely a head banger when you listen to this song. Even the instruments played in this piece has so much energy and spirit, I don’t know it’s hard to explain but I like how it transitions from being loud to Kurt Cobain singing casually to the microphone, it never loses its balance its almost like a rollercoaster when hearing this piece as he’s yelling at the top of his lungs it’s almost as if he's at the peak of the rollercoaster and as he comes down from it he goes back to singing nonchalant, I also liked the opening of the guitar and as it continues on throughout the piece I feel like the guitar is that main key to this piece, but overall it’s a great song and it’s just impossible not to appreciate it.

Listening Assignment - 90s

Listening Assignment
Public Enemy – Don’t Believe the Hype:
This Public Enemy track was very motivating it made me wanna get the fuck up and do something, I just wanted to change the world with my FISTS, on some black power panther shit. I don’t know, it really just got me Hyped (no pun intended), I just like the Funky Rhythm and Speech of Old Hip Hop music, I like music that tells you to go out there and do some shit. And yes, I don’t believe the Hype, I only believe that TRILL = True and Real #Facts #Church #Words man. I never trusted the media, that’s why I hate social media, but on some real shit, I feel like this song basically makes viewers aware that they is something going on in the radio industry, TV Industry, Movie Industry, whatever industry really but I do think you have to be able to delineate what’s real (Remy-Ma) and what’s fake (Nicki-Minaj_fakebootyhavinass).
Beastie Boys – So What Cha Want:
This Beastie Boys song hit harda then a mother-Shut-yo-mouth, damn I was feeling these white boys more than a Catholic Priest… XD Haha, okay all jokes aside though the beat was funky and the rhythm was rock’n’roll like so it still felt white to me, but like the song gave me energy and made me feel like doing something (not really productive but just crazy) like jumping off a building and then doing some Parkour! I like the way they dressed in the video too even if it was normal, they rocked a Beanie and I like rockin my beanie, so together we are the Beanie Brothers.
Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit:
Here we are now, Entertain Us! I already knew about this song before, and every time I listen to it I just get angry (because I’m pumped lol… so basically off adrenaline) but yeah, I really like the song, I don’t know what else to say about it other than I love the Grunginess to Kurt’s voice. By the way I can never say I’m a Nirvana fan because I feel like this is the only song I know by them, but maybe 90% of the people who claim they like Nirvana only know this one song too lol so I don’t feel that disrespectful. So yeah, if anyone else knows any good Nirvana songs please post so I can be “Entertained”.

Weekend Listening...

Public Enemy - Don't Believe The Hype - Reminds me of the 90s, wonder why...  Interesting high pitched sound in the main beat, adds fun character to the track but gets a bit annoying in the mix the more you focus on it.  Love the vocals and backup vocal inflections.  Fun track throughout.

Beastie Boys - So What Cha Want - Have loved this track since I was a kid.  Now I notice there has to be at least a few effects on the vocals because I never understood how the made it sound so unique. I understand people who would not like this style, every aspect is in-your-face and "what you see is what you get," but I like it.  Has that retro feel as well with the DJ disk scratching at points.  Awesome track in my opinion.

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit - Have also loved this track forever.  In a weird way it can fit with the other two tracks.  Definitely has the loud, in-your-face sounds in the track transitions like the others.  Also, the vocals are also loud and energetic a lot, similar to the Beastie Boys almost.  Really like how the track transitions from really calm to building to yelling at you, but never feels unbalanced or all over the place.  Love the track.

Weekend Listening (3/1)

Reviewed by: Emily Cesarini

Genesis “The Carpet Crawlers”
  • I really enjoyed the lyrics and vocals in this piece they fit well with the almost mystical background instrumentals. I like the repetition of the line “you got to get in to get out” I found it to be a powerful line. This is a easy piece to listen to while working as it has a peaceful rhythm to it.

Yes “Long Distance Runaround”
  • This has a very happy upbeat beat that slows down slightly when the vocals come in as well as gets a deeper tone which makes the whole piece a lot less happy.  Then the upbeatness returns during the vocal intramural. The lyrics describe the hardships of being in a long distance and how it can abruptly stop working if the two people are unable to connect at such a distance.

Pink Floyd “One Of These Days”
  • I love the beat in the beginning along with the windy background noise. I also love how more and more instruments begin to layer themselves overtop to create the final effect.

Realized that my description didn't save. I collected all and saved my drum project so that you can access the other drum kits and effects. My primary sample was the Amen Brother break. It's known for being one of the most widely used samples.

You may recognize for its popular use in drum and bass, as well as other breakbeat styles. I added a couple of resonators named Moscow and Berlin because when turned on, they add a different type of tonal texture to the kit. If you play around with the pitch knobs on the effects racks you get some interesting sounding results.

Weekend Listening Assignment: March 5,2017

Genesis-Carpet Crawler:
Sounds like it belongs in the ball dance scene of the movie the labyrinth or another type of fantasy movie. His voice is really peaceful and sounds pretty, even when he raises his voice its still at a low-normal tone.

Yes-Long Distance Runaround:
Liked it but weird change in music/tone half way through. The guys has some nice vocals and the guitar is rhythm is nice, but I get a little lost with the song switch up. Had a good solo too.

Pink Floyd-One of these days:

I really don't like how it took about 50 seconds of just wind until I heard an instrument being played. However I did enjoy the rhythm and tempo that it has, but I feel that the wind sound effects ruins the experience of the song for me. It had an ominous feel, and gave the feeling like something is going to happen or build up to the drums and guitar riffs. It took an odd turn though, with the base and what sounds like flutes, some other things?? Not entirely sure. All the sounds that are happening at once is just too much and clash against each other.

Weekend Listening...

Genesis - Carpet Crawler:  Really love the background beat.  Really happy and a bit upbeat, flowing with the slow and cool vocals.  I would think to put a more ambient beat for the vocals but the beat gives a nice tempo and compliments well.  Really smooth song.

Yes - Long Distance Runaround: Another cool song.  The guitar coming in over and over in the beginning adding onto the beat was nice, gave it a nice tone.  Vocals were good.  The guitar solo was pretty rad.  And outro was also smooth.  Interesting overall.

Pink Floyd - One of these days: Interesting song by an interesting band.  Most noticeably to me was the robotic sound in the buildup that sounded like it had no decay on it and was a bit abrupt was weird but cool.  It was a very chill song to relax to but at the same time you can definitely get energy from it, there are different way to enjoy the song in my opinion - and thats great music.

Listening Assignment Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd

Genesis - Carpet Crawler
I really enjoyed this song for how calming it is. The vocals are soft spoken and the instruments have this hypnotizing effect to it. When the song begins to pick up after 2:30 I really love when they begin to harmonize with the lead singer. I would definitely listen to this again.

Yes - Long Distance Runaround
This piece is very unique. The way the song began it sounded like the default ringtone on a cell phone or upbeat elevator music. However, after 40 seconds the song switched up drastically to a more relaxed tone, in which I really enjoyed. In addition I enjoyed the combination of the bass guitar, piano, and drums.

Pink Floyd - One of these days

For the first 40 seconds this song sounded very quiet and sounded very ominous to me since all I could hear is wind. I like how the song gradually picks up throughout adding different instruments to the mix. However, I’m not a huge fan of this particular piece.  It just seems like one long guitar solo.

Weekend Listening

Genesis - Carpet Crawler

The first thing I noticed about the song was its transcendent quality. The instrumentals and lyrics a have a very relaxed vibe. As the song progresses it picks up in tempo and shifts from a more relaxing vibe to a more uplifting one. It sounds almost like Coldplay in certain ways.

Yes - Long Distance Runaround

I have always appreciated Yes. I find their music very artistic and layered, and theres a certain organized randomness i find very appealing. The song feels like its telling a story, almost in a broadway esque way.

Pink Floyd - One of these days

I can see EDM Trance being influenced by Pink Floyd. Most of their songs including this one have a very trippy, relaxing vibe. The cuts between vocal and instrumental sections allow you to relax and visualize what you are hearing.

Wekend Listening 3/5/17

Genesis, The Carpet Crawlers:
I'm not a huge fan of Genesis, although this is a worthy song. I like the way it builds, starting off as very ambient and moving into a slow yet steady beat and chorus. The lyrics are really cool, they really carry this song. The imagery give the listener something to conjure up in their mind if they don't find the ambient background music very stimulating. Genesis may have done this by design; ambient music isn't meant to hold a person's ear, but rather play in the background of their mind. The main focus here is the lyrics, which are brought to the forefront by being paired with ambient noise.
Yes, Long Distance Runaround:
I like this song; Grateful Dead meets reggae. This song has a lot of interesting elements incorporated within it. Use of loops is prevalent throughout, although the beginning of the track starts out very loose and jam-band like. It shifts between these two aspects (order and disharmony) to good effect. There are clearly distinct parts to this song. Lyrics are good, the vocals don't blow me away, but the song is worth listening to for the instruments.

Pink Floyd, One of these Days:
Pink Floyd has always loved their ambient sounds and effects. This song is no different. Like many Pink Floyd songs, it starts off slow and ambient and builds slowly. A good example of loop is the bass that is prevalent throughout a good portion of the song. I like Floyd's use of the sound of wind in the beginning as well. This song breaks away from traditional song structure, preferring to focus on ambient sounds, psychedelic guitar and "freak out" noises. You have to respect a band that takes risks within their art and Pink Floyd has taken many risks. In my opinion, to great reward in the end.

weekend listening

Genesis: Carpet Crawlers
Amazing song. I don't know how they did it but they created something very special from what is basically a person talking with music in the background. Later on it turns talking more into singing and the pace picks up.. Very well put. The chorus makes perfect sense. Makes you feel like you are in a different world floating around. Great song.

Yes: Long Distance Runaround

Very well put as well. I enjoyed this song because it's very happy to listen to. It kinda lifts you up by listening to it. The background instruments are amazing as well. I don't listen to this kind of music but it's good. There is a guitar solo moment that takes it to another level too.

Pink Floyd: One of these Days
You'll probably hate me for this but the best part of this song where the visuals put in the official video. Didn't really understand what was going on, the beat was a bit too low for my taste. And the fact that it has no vocals just kills it for me. Also, the first 50 seconds have nothing on them? The guitar might be the only thing i can say was more or less good. Not something I'd listen to, but maybe it could fit in some sort of movie or something. I dont know.

Weekend Listening

Genesis: Carpet Crawlers- very chill and relaxing. The first minute the vocals and the fast paced beat didn’t sync well but then the low bass started playing and synced the fast pace beat and the vocals. The music was very soothing and peaceful. It made me feel like my body was a wave in the middle of  a giant sea.

YES: Long Distance Runaround- the beginning was very upbeat and energetic, when the vocals started there was a shift in mood and pace. This pattern continued throughout the music. That along with the rhythm of the vocals and guitars kept the song unpredictable and interesting. I could pick and choose parts of the song that doesn't sound like they could be part of the same song. The transitions are fast but natural. This song was a journey.

Pink Floyd: One of these days-   Some parts like in the wind in the beginning where very ominous and then the guitars and drums began and it became very fun. The music gave me a sense of confidence  and mystery. Towards the middle the song became almost dark and you could almost hear this low voice for a few seconds. Most of the song was full of suspense and the a nice pay off when the guitars and drums pick up again.

Weekend Listening

Weekend Listening Assignment
Genesis: Carpet Crawlers – I literally felt like I was floating in the air while listening to this, and I was passing by all the lifeforms on planet earth and high-fiving all of them. It felt so peaceful and calming and hippy like it was amazing, I just wanted to hug a tree and then use it to launch into space somehow with the power of this music and its very imaginative lyrics. If this song was a lightbulb it would light a blackhole, if it were fire it would burn the sun, this music was absolutely powerful it made me feel like a Phoenix that has arisen from the ashes and somehow became man… American Man.
Yes: Long Distance Runaround– This was an interesting piece, I felt like there wasn’t a lot of Heaviness to the song which I thought was unique but I felt if there were more crazier instruments in the track this could have easily been added to one of Gambino’s new obscure musical creations. I liked the lyrics “looking for the sunshine” it made me feel happy and uplifted because I try to always look for the best part of any negative situation.

Pink Floyd: One of these Days – I just heard the wind in the beginning, but the buildup of that bass…. got damn that was heavy and amazing it felt like a song for a Rocky Balboa movie, it got me pumped up for a big fight. When it finally hit at like 3:44 that was when I had to go buy me a pair of boxing gloves cuz I was ready for the Fwight of my Life, Cash me ousside type of shit, I swear to God, it was that good and motivating! XD

Listening Assighnment: Genesis, Pink Floyd and Yes

Genesis, “The Carpet Crawlers”- At first listening, the instrumental part is so soothing and calm. It just puts you into this calm and steady mood. This feels like the type of song I’d listen to when I just want to be at peace or by myself. It honestly feels like the type of music you’d imagine people who get high listen to, it just gives it that hippie vibe for some reason. I love the beat of the drums and the guitar, especially the guitar; everything is played smoothly. There is no abrupt sound, it’s just smooth all the way which personally I enjoy listening to it. Once the lyrics get involved it actually makes you think, it’s weird to explain it but it’s almost as if you picture this scenario as if, out of this world, it’s nothing you’d ever thought you’d imagine. Personally for me I just thought of it as a stress reliever and it feels as though the lyrics themselves have you thinking of a different kind of world. This song just makes you think of a deeper meaning than whats actually there, at least thats how I sense it.

Pink Floyd, “One of these days”- I found this piece to have a lot of emotion for me, like at first it’s steady with a good beat, it has me bobbing my head a little time to time then it slowly starts to transition into this creepy sort of vibe it. The sound is deep and you can hear it vibrating for a good minute then almost as if demonic voice came into the loop and said what he had to say and it transitions into this spiral pit of emotions. Personally it just felt that way for me, through it all i enjoyed the different tempo and rhythm and the different type of instruments they had to use to come up with this piece. I find it without lyrics to work very well because even though you’re just hearing sounds go from one ear to another in the end it has you feeling some type of way, whether, positive, negative, adventurous, etc.

Yes, “Long Distance Run Around”- This automatically reminded me of that type of music you’d hear play in the background of a video game, at least just the beginning because once the singer begins to sing it erases that whole image in your head. It sounds very happy, I just get this sense positivity the way the beats are played and formed. I really gripped onto that unique bass sequence, It’s definitely caught my attention because now that I hear it over again, I  just catch that sound right away. But, besides that out of the three listening assignments this is my least favorite piece. It catches my attention but not as much as the other two that I’ve heard.

music hw

Supernaut, Black Sabbath

What I would like to objectively pull out of this song as probably everyone else did is the drums and the guitar solos. Amazing music. On the more subjective side, I wasn't really into the vocals but that's just my music taste. Very good quality music.
I Wanna Be Sedated, The Ramones

Definitely the one I liked most from this week. I feel like the lyrics and music in the background work very well together and unlike the other songs, these lyrics actually mean something to me. Very entertaining although a bit repetitive.

Iggy Pop, 1969

What I liked most of this song was the connection between the "clap" or however you call that, and the background guitar (?), it was all very well paced. The lyrics again not very thought off. I feel like at this stage in music history they focused more on the guitar and the beat than anything else because if not I don't understand why the lyrics are so poor. Maybe it's just me.

Television, See no Evil:

Very good riff, amazing guitar solo towards the end. Lyrics well spread out through out the song which leaves no awkward silences like in other older songs. Second favorite of this week's. I specially like how the background goes from higher to lower pitches  and the other way around. I feel like the lyrics are kinda sad but the song itself makes me feel differently, for some reason. Maybe the background is just cheerful enough to outweigh it.
