Listening Assighnment: Genesis, Pink Floyd and Yes

Genesis, “The Carpet Crawlers”- At first listening, the instrumental part is so soothing and calm. It just puts you into this calm and steady mood. This feels like the type of song I’d listen to when I just want to be at peace or by myself. It honestly feels like the type of music you’d imagine people who get high listen to, it just gives it that hippie vibe for some reason. I love the beat of the drums and the guitar, especially the guitar; everything is played smoothly. There is no abrupt sound, it’s just smooth all the way which personally I enjoy listening to it. Once the lyrics get involved it actually makes you think, it’s weird to explain it but it’s almost as if you picture this scenario as if, out of this world, it’s nothing you’d ever thought you’d imagine. Personally for me I just thought of it as a stress reliever and it feels as though the lyrics themselves have you thinking of a different kind of world. This song just makes you think of a deeper meaning than whats actually there, at least thats how I sense it.

Pink Floyd, “One of these days”- I found this piece to have a lot of emotion for me, like at first it’s steady with a good beat, it has me bobbing my head a little time to time then it slowly starts to transition into this creepy sort of vibe it. The sound is deep and you can hear it vibrating for a good minute then almost as if demonic voice came into the loop and said what he had to say and it transitions into this spiral pit of emotions. Personally it just felt that way for me, through it all i enjoyed the different tempo and rhythm and the different type of instruments they had to use to come up with this piece. I find it without lyrics to work very well because even though you’re just hearing sounds go from one ear to another in the end it has you feeling some type of way, whether, positive, negative, adventurous, etc.

Yes, “Long Distance Run Around”- This automatically reminded me of that type of music you’d hear play in the background of a video game, at least just the beginning because once the singer begins to sing it erases that whole image in your head. It sounds very happy, I just get this sense positivity the way the beats are played and formed. I really gripped onto that unique bass sequence, It’s definitely caught my attention because now that I hear it over again, I  just catch that sound right away. But, besides that out of the three listening assignments this is my least favorite piece. It catches my attention but not as much as the other two that I’ve heard.
