Listening assignment

Terry Riley In C- my first reaction to this song is that the beginning high pitch sound was very repetitive and annoying, I hated it and it would not stop. After a while the sound become more in sync with the rest of the music. It sounded like a build up to something like I was holding in a sneeze for 5 minutes. It kind of reminded me of like the nut cracker on cocaine. Over all i did not enjoy it. it was annoying repetitive and gave me a headache after 10minutes.

John Chawning Stria- very moody and eerie. Oddly soothing, felt like I was in a monstrous trance and being transformed into a foreign creature. Trippy potential. I can see this being used in like a sci-fi movie as mood music. I enjoyed listening to it for a bit but then after a while i got focused on what I was doing and it faded to background noise , I forgot it was on and could not remember when it stopped . over all interesting experience kinda cool.

Steve Reich Come out- very interesting and unique. If not for the visuals it would be very frustrating to listen to but I found myself very focused on the “dance” routine. I felt like something was going to jump out at me at any moment. The sound became more warped as the video continued making the eerie you get at the start go away. I dont feel comfortable saying whether or not I like or dislike this because it seems like its not supposed to be liked or disliked or even understood. It just seems like it supposed to be thought provoking which it is. I could see myself having a lengthy conversation over every piece and element of the video and how they correlate like how warped the sound gets from beginning to end, the relationship between the warped sound and the dancers, the repetitive dance moves that change over time, the camera angles and how it all belongs together. It does get boring to watch but i think that’s because I was by myself with none to discuss it with.

Iannis Xenakis - Concret PH- from just listening to it im not sure what it was exacltly. I had to google it and found that it was experimental but I still wasn’t sure if it was to be taken as a serious art piece. The sound reminded me of frying bacon and I was thinking about bacon the whole time. If this was an art piece it is definitely thought provoking but not emotionally moving. I felt nothing and just had many questions after listening to it and google had little answers.
