Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno or more commonly "Brian Eno" is an English musician/composer/record producer/singer/visual artist, known as one of the principal innovators of ambient music. His studies involved visual art design yet, he has found much success in the musical realm. He is most know for his work with chance and generative music. A pioneer of rock, Eno began producing officially with Roxy Music in 1971. Later, in 1975 he would begin to develop his first generative tracks. Despite the fact that many internationally recognized musical artists can pay tribute to Eno for his work/influence on their music, he is an unsung pioneer. Admittedly, I had never heard of Eno prior to our lecture despite the fact that modern dance often uses ambient music, generative music and chance operation.
Generative Music:
This term was coined by Brian Eno and describes a classification of music that is created by a system and always changing.
There are four primary perspectives on "Generative Music" (Wooller, R. et al., 2005) (reproduced with permission):
-Linguistic/structural (analytic theories generate structurally coherent material)
-Creative/procedural (no inputs, not transformational)
-Biological/emergent (music that cannot be repeated)
